Convert Word to TXT online
Convert DOCX to TXT when you need the raw words from a Word document without any formatting — for pasting into code, scripts, plain-text editors, or systems that only accept plain text.
When should you convert Word to TXT?
- Extract clean text for scripts or text processing
- Strip formatting before pasting into another editor
- Create a lightweight, universally readable copy of a document
- Prepare document content for tools that reject rich formats
Before you convert
Formatting is not kept
Bold, italics, headings, images, and tables are dropped — only the plain words and line breaks remain.
Best for text extraction, not archiving
Keep the original DOCX if you need the formatted version later; TXT is a one-way simplification.
What happens to your file
LibreOffice opens the DOCX headlessly with its Writer filter and exports TXT. Writer, Calc, and Impress each have their own permitted output set — LibreOffice will not convert across those categories, so the allowed targets here are Writer's.
Settings this conversion runs with
| Engine | LibreOffice headless (Writer) |
|---|---|
| Output | TXT |
| Font handling | Missing fonts detected and substituted before rendering |
What changes
- If the document uses a font the server does not have, a substitution is picked before rendering — a close match, not the original. Line breaks and page counts can shift as a result, which is why it is worth opening an important file before sending it on.
- Right-to-left documents get an extra pass: justification is normalized before rendering so Arabic paragraphs do not come out stretched or misaligned, and a known-bad Arabic font is swapped for one the renderer handles correctly.
