For photographs, use JPG instead
PNG compresses photographs poorly. A camera photo converted to PNG can end up five or ten times the size of the HEIC while looking identical to the JPG version.
Extra HEIF data is dropped
Live Photo frames, depth maps, and non-destructive edits do not survive. PNG stores one flat image.

PNG output is lossless, then run through a size optimizer: pngquant is used when it is available on the worker, with Pillow's own quantizer as the fallback. Drop the quality setting below 80 (or switch on Optimize) and the palette is reduced up front instead.
