What happens to your file

Converting MOV to an animated GIF is a downsampling job, not a transcode. GIF is not encoded like the other video targets. The clip is run through a palette filter: frame rate is capped at 12 fps, width is scaled to 480 px (height follows the aspect ratio, Lanczos resampling), a 128-colour palette is generated from the clip, and Bayer dithering maps the frames onto it. The result loops forever.

What changes

  • GIF stores every frame as a palette image, so long clips get very large very fast. Keep the source to a few seconds unless you want a file measured in tens of megabytes.
  • 128 colours is not enough for smooth gradients. Skies, skin tones, and fades will band visibly; flat graphics and screen recordings hold up much better.
