Convert MP4 to FLAC online
Convert MP4 to FLAC when you want a lossless copy of a video's audio for editing or archiving. FLAC preserves every sample it is given and compresses to roughly half the size of the equivalent WAV.
When should you convert MP4 to FLAC?
- Archive the audio from a recording without further loss
- Import into an editor that prefers lossless input
- Keep a master audio copy separate from the video
- Halve the storage compared with exporting WAV
Before you convert
Lossless does not mean improved
The audio inside the MP4 is already lossy. FLAC preserves it exactly — it does not reconstruct the detail AAC discarded. You get a faithful, larger copy of what is there.
Expect a large file
Lossless audio is roughly five times the size of the AAC it came from, even after FLAC compression.
What happens to your file
The video stream is dropped (-vn) and only the audio is kept, re-encoded to FLAC with FLAC at lossless compression. What you get back is an audio file the length of the original clip — no picture, no thumbnail.
Settings this conversion runs with
| Engine | ffmpeg |
|---|---|
| Video stream | Discarded (-vn) |
| Audio codec | FLAC |
| Audio setting | lossless compression |
What changes
- We check the MP4 file for an audio stream with ffprobe first — a silent screen recording or a camera clip with no microphone track will fail fast rather than hand you an empty file.
- FLAC does not compress the audio, so the output is far larger than the audio inside the MP4 file. It also cannot restore detail the video's own compression already removed.
