Convert MP4 to OPUS online
Convert MP4 to Opus when you want the audio at the smallest possible size without it sounding compressed. Opus is the best codec here per bit — it holds up at bitrates where MP3 falls apart — and is encoded at 128 kbps.
When should you convert MP4 to OPUS?
- Extract speech from a recording for a voice application
- Store long interviews or lectures at minimal size
- Serve audio on a modern web page or in a WebRTC pipeline
- Get better quality than MP3 at a lower bitrate
Before you convert
Support is narrower than MP3
Opus is excellent and comparatively new. Browsers and modern apps handle it; older hardware and some media players do not. Use MP3 if you are handing the file to someone else.
The source is already compressed
The audio in an MP4 has been through AAC. Opus encodes it efficiently but cannot restore what AAC removed.
What happens to your file
The video stream is dropped (-vn) and only the audio is kept, re-encoded to OPUS with libopus at 128 kbps. What you get back is an audio file the length of the original clip — no picture, no thumbnail.
Settings this conversion runs with
| Engine | ffmpeg |
|---|---|
| Video stream | Discarded (-vn) |
| Audio codec | libopus |
| Audio setting | 128 kbps |
What changes
- We check the MP4 file for an audio stream with ffprobe first — a silent screen recording or a camera clip with no microphone track will fail fast rather than hand you an empty file.
- The audio inside a MP4 file is already compressed, so this is a second lossy pass. It is fine for listening; it is not the route to take if you plan to master or re-edit the audio.
