Convert MP4 to WAV online
Convert MP4 to WAV when you need the audio from a video as uncompressed PCM — for an editor, a transcription tool, or analysis software that refuses compressed input. The video stream is dropped entirely and only the audio is written out.
When should you convert MP4 to WAV?
- Pull dialogue out of a recording for transcription
- Import a video's audio into a DAW for editing
- Feed audio-analysis software that requires PCM input
- Separate a soundtrack from footage before remixing
Before you convert
We check for audio first
The file is probed for an audio stream before the job starts, so a silent screen recording fails fast with a clear message rather than producing an empty file.
WAV does not recover quality
The audio inside an MP4 is already compressed. WAV preserves it exactly and makes it much larger; it does not improve it.
What happens to your file
The video stream is dropped (-vn) and only the audio is kept, re-encoded to WAV with PCM signed 16-bit little-endian at uncompressed. What you get back is an audio file the length of the original clip — no picture, no thumbnail.
Settings this conversion runs with
| Engine | ffmpeg |
|---|---|
| Video stream | Discarded (-vn) |
| Audio codec | PCM signed 16-bit little-endian |
| Audio setting | uncompressed |
What changes
- We check the MP4 file for an audio stream with ffprobe first — a silent screen recording or a camera clip with no microphone track will fail fast rather than hand you an empty file.
- WAV does not compress the audio, so the output is far larger than the audio inside the MP4 file. It also cannot restore detail the video's own compression already removed.
