Look before you convert
Preview renders the pages of a PDF in the browser so you can see what is actually in the file before committing to a conversion. Nothing is uploaded for processing beyond producing the preview, and the file expires on the same schedule as any other job.
The most useful thing it tells you is which kind of PDF you have. If you can select a sentence, there is a real text layer and conversions to Word, text or a spreadsheet will have something to work with. If selection produces a rectangle over the whole page, the file is an image of a page and needs OCR first.
What to check while you are here
- Page count and order, especially for a merged or split file.
- Whether tables have ruled borders — unruled tables are the ones that convert least cleanly.
- Whether the document is one column or several, since reading order follows the file rather than the visual layout.
- For Arabic documents, whether the text renders with correct letter joining and direction.
- Which pages you actually need, so you can split first and convert less.
