The video is dropped, not converted
Choosing an audio target discards the video stream entirely and re-encodes only the audio. What comes back is an audio file the length of the original clip — no picture, no thumbnail. MP3 is written with LAME at VBR quality 2, which lands around 190 kbps: small enough to send, good enough that most listeners will not pick it out.
The file is checked for an audio stream before the job starts, so a silent screen recording or a camera clip with no microphone track fails immediately with a clear message rather than handing you an empty file.
This is a second lossy pass
The audio inside a video file has already been compressed once, usually as AAC. Extracting it to MP3 compresses that result again. For listening — a lecture, a podcast, an interview, a song you want on a phone — the difference is not audible and the convenience is worth it.
It is the wrong route if you intend to edit or master the audio. For that, extract to WAV or FLAC instead: neither improves on what the video contained, but both avoid stacking another round of loss before you start working.
| Purpose | Target |
|---|---|
| Listening, sharing, a phone or car | MP3 — plays on everything. |
| Editing in a DAW or audio editor | WAV — uncompressed, opens anywhere. |
| Archiving the audio losslessly | FLAC — about half the size of WAV. |
| Apple libraries | M4A. |
| Smallest file at good quality | Opus, if the destination supports it. |
A note on what you extract
Extracting audio from a video you did not create does not give you rights to it. That is worth stating plainly: the tool will happily process anything you upload, and whether you may use the result is a separate question from whether the conversion works.
