Order is the part that matters
Drop every image at once and drag them into sequence before exporting. Files rarely arrive in the order you want — phone cameras name by timestamp, scanners by tray order, downloads by whatever the browser decided — so the reorder step is usually the real work.
Once several images are combined, the layout engine renders the pages rather than embedding the originals byte-for-byte. That is unavoidable when fitting different image sizes onto consistent pages, and it is why a single-image conversion and a multi-image one behave differently.
Getting a document that reads well
- Shoot or scan in a consistent orientation. Mixed portrait and landscape images produce a document that has to be rotated while reading.
- Crop before combining if the photos have large margins — page size is driven by the images.
- Use scan cleanup for photographed paper; it straightens and brightens the page and is the difference between a usable document and a stack of snapshots.
- Turn on OCR if anyone will need to search or copy the text afterwards.
