Tested example ·
PDF to Word: an editable three-column table
The one-page, text-based PDF produced an editable Word table with the same three columns, header and two data rows. The values 3.50 and 0.80 were retained as text in their cells.
Input size: 1,929 bytes; output: 37,384 bytes.
Reproduce this result
Download the PDF, upload it above and convert to DOCX. In Word or LibreOffice, click inside the output table and edit a value. Compare every row with the original.
This is a simple English table, not proof of Arabic layout accuracy or OCR quality. Scanned pages, merged cells and complex layouts need separate checks. Review spacing and page breaks before using your own result.

Convert PDF to Word online
Use this PDF to Word converter when you need editable text from a PDF instead of a fixed preview. It works best for reports, letters, forms, and simple layouts where recovering the words matters more than preserving every pixel.
When should you convert PDF to Word?
- Edit a PDF draft in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice
- Copy text from reports without retyping it manually
- Recover tables and paragraphs from simple business documents
- Create a DOCX starting point before final proofreading
Before you convert
Layout can shift
PDF stores pages as fixed visual objects, so complex columns, scans, and unusual fonts may need manual cleanup after conversion.
Scanned PDFs need OCR
If the source is a photo or scan, use a searchable/OCR workflow first so the converter has real text to extract.
What happens to your file
pdf2docx reads the PDF's text runs and their positions and rebuilds them as Word paragraphs, tables, and text boxes. On long documents the work is split across several processes so a big file does not take proportionally longer.
Settings this conversion runs with
| Engine | pdf2docx |
|---|---|
| Recovers | Text, paragraphs, tables, basic styling |
| Long documents | Multi-process above a page threshold |
What changes
- A PDF stores where marks sit on a page, not what the document meant. Multi-column layouts, floating figures, and unusual fonts are reconstructed by inference and often need cleanup.
- A scanned PDF contains pictures of words, not words. Run it through the searchable-PDF/OCR option first, or the DOCX comes back with images and no editable text.

Guides for this conversion
- Why PDF to Word breaks tables and columns
PDF stores where marks sit on a page, not what the document meant. That single fact explains almost every strange result you get from a PDF to Word conversion — and points at how to get a clean one.
- Scanned PDFs: why conversion returns an empty file, and what OCR does
Two PDFs can look identical and be completely different files. Here is how to tell which one you have, and what to do when yours is a picture of a document.

Why a PDF does not always convert cleanly
A Word file describes structure: this is a heading, this is a table with three columns, these cells are merged. A PDF describes the result of laying that structure out — place this glyph at this coordinate, draw a line from here to here. There is usually no table object in the file at all.
So converting out of PDF is inference rather than translation. pdf2docx reads the text runs and their positions, groups them into lines and paragraphs, and proposes a table where it finds ruling lines or strong column alignment. That works well on a letter or a report and gets less certain as the layout gets more interesting.
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| Table without ruled borders | Column edges are inferred from alignment alone, so a table can arrive as paragraphs. |
| Two or more columns | Reading order may not match visual order, interleaving sentences. |
| Merged or nested cells | Hard to represent automatically; usually needs manual repair. |
| Table split across pages | Treated as two unrelated tables, because nothing in the file links them. |
Check whether your PDF contains text at all
Open the file in any viewer and try to select a sentence. If a highlight follows the words, there is a real text layer and this tool will work normally. If you get a rectangle over the whole page, the PDF is a photograph of a page — a scan, a phone picture, or a fax — and there is nothing to extract.
For that kind of file, run the searchable-PDF option first. It uses OCR to add an invisible text layer behind the image, after which a normal conversion works. Selecting text is not a guarantee of a clean result either: the text layer can carry an unusual reading order or substituted characters.
Getting a better result
- If you only need the data from a table, convert the PDF to a spreadsheet instead — table extraction handles tabular pages better than a whole-document conversion.
- If you only need the words, convert to plain text. It is faster and never invents structure.
- If the PDF was generated from a Word file that still exists, use that file. No conversion beats the original.
- For complex layouts, fix the table structure first and the styling second — the other order means redoing the styling.

Frequently asked questions
Will the Word file be editable?+
Text-based PDFs can produce editable paragraphs and tables. Scanned pages are images and need OCR first. Check text, table structure and reading order before using the result.
Can I open it in Google Docs?+
Yes. DOCX opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice, and Pages.
What about scanned PDFs?+
Scanned PDFs are images of text. Use the searchable-PDF / OCR options first so the text can be recovered.
