What the model is good at, and what it is not
Background removal runs a segmentation model that decides, pixel by pixel, what is subject and what is background. It is genuinely good at the shapes it was trained on — people, products, animals, objects photographed against a distinct background.
It struggles in predictable places: fine hair against a busy background, transparent and reflective objects like glass or water, motion blur, and subjects whose colour closely matches what is behind them. Those are limits of the approach rather than settings you can turn up.
| Subject | Typical result |
|---|---|
| Product on a plain background | Clean, usually usable as-is. |
| Person, head and shoulders | Good, though fine hair may need touching up. |
| Fine hair against a detailed background | Edges soften or get cut; the hardest case. |
| Glass, water, smoke | Unreliable — transparency has no single right answer. |
| Subject the same colour as the background | Parts of the subject may be removed. |
The output is a transparent PNG, and that matters
The result is a PNG with a real alpha channel, so the cutout stays transparent wherever you place it. If you then convert that PNG to JPG, the transparency is gone permanently — JPG has no alpha channel, and the transparent area is composited onto white.
This is the single most common way people lose their own cutout. If you need a smaller file and you need the transparency, convert to WebP instead: it keeps full alpha and is usually smaller than the PNG.
Getting a better result is mostly about the input. Even, diffuse lighting, a background that contrasts with the subject, and a sharp original do more than any post-processing.
